Welcome to Longstraw Cottage

Do you remember how meat used to taste? Joints with proper crackling for Sunday roast. Bacon that doesn't shrivel up and leak white liquid into your pan. Sausages that are full of real meat, not "recovered" meat from the butchers' floor, that don't split their skins. Did you think you would never taste meat like that again?

Well, now you can. Here at Longstraw Cottage we are committed to producing top quality, outdoor reared, rare breed pork and lamb, and passing it on to you at competitive prices.

Our pigs and sheep are raised from weaners and lambs on our smallholding in a non-intensive way, ensuring the meat retains all the old-fashioned virtues of succulence, tenderness and flavour. Because they are raised naturally and mature more slowly, most rare breeds have much better eating qualities than the supermarket meat.

Key to the success of what we are trying to do here is the welfare of our animals. We buy in our weaners and lambs from trusted local breeders, so the traceability of your meat can go right back to the animals parents and grandparents. Although we are not officially "organic", we farm in an organic way, with no unnecessary and harmful chemicals. When the time comes, we take the animals to the abatoir ourselves, where we know the animals will be handled with the minimum of stress.

Not only do the animals not travel very far, but our meat doesn't travel the country from depot to supermarket. Everything is done as locally as possible, keeping food miles to a minimum.

The butchers we use to cut our meat have been serving the local community for over fifty years, winning many awards along the way. They are as keen as we are to prepare, present and supply the meat to the highest standards.
